Today marks Ed’s 50th strip and next Monday will make it one year to the day that we published the very first comic. We have yet to begin aggressively promoting EMW since we always knew the first year (or two) would be a huge learning curve for us. Taking into consideration how many webcomics are over before they even really begin, we wanted some proof that we were in this for the long haul.
It’s so strange that to us, we already feel like this prelude is almost over. All the scripts have been finished, we’re a few strips ahead of what’s published, and we’re dedicating a lot more thought to the next chapter. But when you’re only putting up one strip a week, you forget how much longer it takes to hit each big beat of the story.
I think next week’s strip definitively pushes us into the final part of this particular story. There’s still a lot of ground to cover, but I think it’ll be clear that this is now the final act. And it’s a very fitting one-year anniversary.
It’s no secret that I think our current format has been extremely restrictive for us both in terms of storytelling and visuals. But this whole process has been invaluable to Kristen and myself and we’ve got some really ambitious plans for the next phase of the comic. We’re going to try and keep the elements we think have been working, but ultimately it’s going to look and feel a whole lot different.
I feel like I’ve been doing this song and dance for months now. But it’s only because I’m so excited. =-)
