A trip down memory lane at 88 mph

I really like the way this strip came together. I think Kristen did some great work. From the second she handed me the first panel I knew it reminded me of something but couldn’t put my finger on what exactly it was. Then it hit me. The “Back to the Future” Happy Meal toy of Doc sticking out of the DeLorean. And then that reminded me how excited I became when those toys were announced.  Excitement that was short lived when I saw that I couldn’t just get the DeLorean. It had big, stupid (and completely disproportional) Doc Brown stuck to the side of it. I’m getting mad just looking at it. What are you smiling at, jerk??? You’re ruining the toy!!!

All I wanted was a DeLorean with tires that flipped up like they did in BTTF Part II. And I’m sure somewhere someone made one. But I never owned that toy. I only had my Unhappy Meal version and one from Universal Studios that shot sparks out the back. Which sounds cool in theory but the device needed to produce those sparks was just carelessly slapped onto the back of the car making it the furthest thing from screen accurate. So now two things are probably pretty clear… 1) I was a terrible child to try and buy Christmas presents for (still true, btw) and 2) I’ve devoted the bulk of this update to bitching about Back to the Future toys and not talking about the comic.

I’ll do my best to work through these issues and we’ll see you next week!

Deadlines, spelling errors, and nappy time.

I keep looking at Rick’s expression in the third panel and laughing. I think that’s the most emotive he’s been about anything that’s happened thus far. I can easily say that the past two weeks have been some of the most frustrating when it comes to producing this comic. It had nothing to do with the comic itself, we were just a little busier than usual with some of our other obligations. I was also sans computer and internet for long stretches of time which was no picnic. But you don’t care. And why should you? This is a terribly boring yarn I’m weaving. The good news (and the point) is that next week we should be back to normal. Thanks again to everyone who’s been voting for Ed with those handy little buttons to the right of the screen. It’s really been making a difference.

I had spelling errors in almost all of the word balloons on my first pass. I think that means it’s nappy time. Sweet dreams, friends. We’ll see you next week!

Ka-Bummer…

The cops in the town where I went to college would never arrest someone for that. They’d encourage it and take pictures. In fact all they ever really did was drive drunk people home and hit on girls.  The squad cars were essentially taxis with cooler lights. Anyways,  guess it’s time to officially add these guys to the cast list in our About section. Now no one can give me grief about the pretty blonde running around in underwear anymore because this time it’s a dude. See? We objectify women AND men so it’s all gravy, baby. What’s that? Never use that expression again? Check.

See you next week when “Plan B” reveals itself!

Yup… THAT Rick Savini.

The guy Stacy wore her special underwear for. And these two are about to go through all sorts of crazy sh*t together. In an earlier post I made reference to the fact that Alyssa was becoming one of my favorite characters.  What’s interesting is that she wasn’t created specifically for this comic. She’s appeared in several scripts, short stories, and other works of mine that for one reason or another just never saw completion. Most were very similar in tone to EMW so I knew when I was planning the comic that she’d be a great fit. It sounds silly but I’m sure other writers know how when you live with certain characters long enough you start thinking of them as real people.  So in a strange way it was like casting the comic rather than creating someone for it. Weird. But anyways, she kicks ass and I think you’re going to dig her so keep checking back to see what’s in store for our newbies and how their story converges with our friends still trapped in the dorm.

See you next week!

And here we go…

We’ve obviously known about these two for quite awhile and we’ve been really excited to introduce them. Not only because it’s a welcome change of pace but also because they’re just fun characters. Admittedly you can’t tell that yet just from this brief introduction but I promise there are some big payoffs ahead.  Especially once everything starts tying together.

I know six panels a week isn’t all that much and we’ve thought about ditching the full color format in favor of a more frequent update schedule but that just doesn’t feel right. The good news is once the prelude is complete and we move into our next arc we’ll be doing full page layouts instead of the Sunday comic format.

Check back next week to find out the identities of these two. You already know one of them. See you then!
